Welcome to YA Scavenger Hunt! Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize--one lucky winner will receive one book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online until 12 noon Pacific Time on Sunday, April 8th!

SCAVENGER HUNT POST
Today, I am hosting Gina Ciocca on my website for the YA Scavenger Hunt!
Here's a little bit about her:
Gina Ciocca is the author of LAST YEAR'S MISTAKE (Simon Pulse, 2015), BUSTED (Sourcebooks Fire, 2018), and A KISS IN THE DARK (Simon Pulse, 2018). Respecter of the Fluff. Lover of love.
I'm so happy to host Gina here today. So without further ado, here's Gina!
Welcome to the YA Scavenger Hunt! Thank you, Julie, for hosting me.
Today I’m sharing some behind-the-scenes photos of the setting for my newest novel, A KISS IN THE DARK. The story was inspired in part by a Superbowl commercial, and also by a blackout… that occurred during the Superbowl. All this football-related inspiration is pretty ironic, considering how little I watch or know about sports. But the titular kiss occurs during a football game, and the story includes flashback chapters that tie the identity of the mystery kisser to a fire that nearly destroyed Macy’s best friend’s house – and was also the final straw in destroying their friendship.
Here is the official blurb:
When the lights go out at a Georgia high school football game, Macy Atwood finds herself in the arms of a boy who kisses her senseless – but is gone by the time the lights come back on. All she knows is that there was something special – and oddly familiar – about her mystery kisser.
Noah Granger, Ridgedale’s resident bad boy and newest transfer student, has no problem taking credit for the kiss, but Macy can’t shake the feeling that he’s lying. Especially since a photograph of Macy and former star football player Joel Hargrove resurfaced online moments before the blackout, a not-so random reminder of how hard she fell for Joel last year. And how doing so ultimately sent her lifelong friendships with Meredith Kopala and Ben Collins up in literal smoke.
Soon junior year’s wounds begin to reopen as Macy realizes the events that unfolded are somehow tied to her mystery kisser. Discovering how means finally facing what really went wrong with Meredith, Ben, and Joel – and finding out what Noah is covering up.
But the closer Macy gets to figuring it all out, the more she starts to worry that the boy who kissed her in the dark and the boy who is stealing her heart might be two very different people.
A little background:
One of my favorite things about this story is the setting. This is my first book set outside the northeast, which is where I grew up. I moved to Georgia in 2013, and I discovered so many fantastic places that I wanted to incorporate into a novel. Apparently one of them was my own neighborhood, because it’s where I picture Macy living. She even loves to walk down to the lake at the center of my… uh, her subdivision, and snap pictures. Just like I do.
“It’s one of my favorite places to be alone with my thoughts. I love that the water is the sky’s mirror, the only place where the clouds ever take the same formation twice. I love that I can come out here with my camera to capture the sunset, and every night it’s new and different and breathtaking.”
Another place I just had to incorporate into the story is Old Mill Park, the former site of a Civil-war era Roswell manufacturing mill. The mill burned down in the 1800’s, and hiking trails now weave through the ruins, along with Vickery creek, which was dammed to supply power to the mill in the 1830’s.
The result, as Macy says, is “a gorgeous waterfall that looks like it should be tucked between picturesque mountains, not around the corner from a main drag in the suburbs of Atlanta.”
While Old Mill is the site for the cheerleaders-vs-football-players scavenger hunt, Mugsy’s Coffee Shop is the place where Macy likes to grab a latte or a cup of tea before school.
Or, you know, have tense, awkward run-ins with former good friend, Ben Collins.
Ben shifts in his seat and rests his elbows on the table. “Don’t you think it’s time we talked about what happened last year?”
I take a sip of my coffee, purposely avoiding his eyes. “What is there to talk about?”
“A lot, and I think you know it.”
“That’s funny, because there were a few things you could’ve said before that night that would’ve made everything pretty different.”
For a second we lock eyes, both ready to draw our respective swords. But then a flash of red car pulling into the parking lot catches my attention, and I scoot from my seat.
Hope you enjoyed this glimpse of some of the real places that brought Macy’s story to life. Happy hunting!
Doesn't that sound like a great read??? Thank you so much for being my guest here today, Gina!
